Like Mother, Like Carol's Daughter

by Brittany Taylor

Can you believe that 2008 is already saying its goodbyes and 2009 is waiting just down the block to take its place? Usher in a grand new year by treating your body right. I don’t mean pledging to stick to a new diet, or swearing off chocolate (or potato chips or red meat…). I mean rewarding your body for keeping you going, by indulging in some of the good-for-you goodies from Carol’s Daughter.

“Beauty by nature”—that’s the essence of Lisa Price’s home grown beauty business. Having taken seed on the recipes of her mother and grandmother thirteen years ago, the fabulous products which originated in Lisa’s Brooklyn kitchen are now celebrity staples and available online and in stores near you. Carol’s Daughter is very much about keeping family tradition alive through nature’s bounty. “My mom’s name was Carol,” Lisa says on the website, “and I named my company Carol’s Daughter because it all started with being my mother’s child and how she, my father, and my family made me who and what I am today.”

Lisa began concocting head-to-toe beauty products as gifts for her friends in 1993. After being discovered by a record exec, Carol’s Daughter was born and its homemade products developed a cult following. Success hasn’t diminished its homely roots, however; all of the products are still handmade in the now warehouse-like kitchen. Indeed, from the get-go, Lisa has always been about keeping her work down-to-earth, literally. “From the beginning, my creations started with a beautiful fragrance and the best ingredients, before evolving into product. Nana too was very particular about her ingredients. She only wanted the best for her family. I bring this same approach to Carol’s Daughter.” To Sephora, she has said, “I wanted lots of moisture and no synthetic preservatives. If I couldn't pronounce the ingredient, it wasn't going into the pot." Carol’s Daughter also has a stringent no animal testing policy.

Wondering where you should start? Lisa says, “Hair Milk is my go-to product for beautiful, shiny curls.” Made with essential oil of lemongrass, sweet almond oil, vitamins C and E, and other natural ingredients, the light, fast-absorbing ‘hair lotion’ was named a 2008 Best of Sephora Award Winner as the ‘Best Natural Wonder’. Hair Milk is great for defining and moisturizing curly hair. Seeking to treat your hands to a home-style manicure? Try the Lemon Ginger Mint Manicure in a Jar, winner of Health Magazine’s Healthy Beauty Award. The product line is endless and continually being added to. Don’t forget to browse their men’s shop for your favorite guy. Products are available online at carolsdaughter.com and sephora.com, as well as in Carol’s Daughter stores (check website for locations), Sephora stores, and Macy’s.

Who says beauty has to hurt? Carol’s Daughter is easy on the wallet, quick to find locally or online, and a pleasure to see, smell, and use, of course! Ring in this new year right!
